Happiness must be, for most men and women, an achievement rather than a gift of the gods, and in this achievement, effort, both inward and outward, must play a great part.
Apathy, lack of emotion, indifference. Is that really us? Do we care so little about our surroundings our physical mental, emotional and cultural wellbeing to have given up? Life’s priorities take over – we have bills to pay mouths to feed, houses to clean. The lack of colour and excitement makes us forget that we are alive.
Going out, doing something, making a difference can bring so much more to our life. We walk past things every day that we shake our heads at and tut, ‘look at the state of that’ or ‘why don’t they do something about that’. The ‘cleanup’ after the riots down south a few years back are a prime example of motivated people getting organised, doing something for themselves, taking some pride and going out there and doing it. It only took a few people to kick it off – a few messages on Twitter – and within hours there were hundreds of people on the streets, brushes in hand, cleaning up. On the back of it a website was set up http://www.wewillgather.co.uk/ to enable people to get together and do more of a good thing.
Fortunately we are not at the same scale here – there has been no riot, no large-scale emergency. But little things can make a difference. How much satisfaction would you gain from doing something about it? Why not get involved in local groups and projects, share a skill you have or gather people together to spend money in a local shop, and help revitalise our town. So what’s stopping you?
